In the Smoke, Tally meets David, the son of two former surgeons who helped develop the Pretty surgery. Equipped with a tracking device, she follows Shay’s clues and eventually finds the Smoke. Torn between her desire to become Pretty and her loyalty to Shay, Tally reluctantly agrees. When Tally is about to receive her surgery, she is approached by the authorities, who offer her a deal: help them locate the Smoke and bring Shay back or remain Ugly forever. Before her surgery, Shay runs away to a secret community called the Smoke, where people live without undergoing the operation. However, Shay is opposed to the surgery and introduces Tally to the idea of a rebellion against the system. While waiting for her turn, Tally befriends Shay, another Ugly who shares her birthday. Her best friend, Peris, has already undergone the surgery and moved to New Pretty Town. The protagonist, Tally Youngblood, is an Ugly who is eagerly awaiting her transformation. The story is set in a future society where people are divided into two categories based on their appearance: “Uglies” and “Pretties.” At the age of 16, everyone undergoes a mandatory surgery to become beautiful and join the privileged class of Pretties. “Uglies” is a young adult dystopian novel written by Scott Westerfeld, published in 2005. It’s a secret she feels she must keep from her boyfriend, who turns out to be the physician’s son. Not only is Brenda doing her best to support her sister and her fatherless nephews, but she is a teenager falling in love for the first time, an experience marred by the roving hands of a trusted physician. There are many stories to choose from, and my favourites were those of Brenda and Percy. Dodging the draft and feeling like a coward while Tom’s best friend faces war in the jungle is only one such truth, and Jocelyn explores other secrets surrounding the fellow students at the boarding school Jenny attends and those connected to them. While being drafted was the catalyst of the story, instead it was an examination of the truths people hide. I confess, I went into this book expecting something that it wasn’t, a piece of historical fiction examining the draft for the Vietnam War. Review: A full-length novel, What We Hide by Marthe Jocelyn reads more like a collection of short stories with a common theme, the secrets we keep to survive. Tom and his sister Jenn are sent to England to go to school, hiding far away from the reality of war, and in the process end up meeting several colourful characters at Jenny’s boarding school with secrets of their own to hide. Matt’s family encourages him to serve his country, while Tom’s family frantically searches for a loophole, finding one in the education clause. Summary: After receiving their draft notices to fight in the Vietnam War, Tom and his friend Matt take very different paths. But the inspired leaders and the inspired organizations -regardless of their size, regardless of their industry- all think, act and communicate from the inside out. We go from the clearest thing to the fuzziest thing. By “why,” I mean: What’s your purpose? What’s your cause? What’s your belief? Why does your organization exist? Why do you get out of bed in the morning? And why should anyone care? Well, as a result, the way we think, the way we act, the way we communicate is from the outside in. And by “why” I don’t mean “to make a profit.” That’s a result. Some know HOW they do it, whether you call it your differentiated value proposition or your proprietary process or your USP.īut very, very few people or organizations know WHY they do what they do. Every single person, every single organization on the planet knows WHAT they do, 100 percent. Why? How? What? This little idea explains why some organizations and some leaders are able to inspire where others aren’t. All I did was codify it, and it’s probably the world’s simplest idea. And it’s the complete opposite to everyone else. «…As it turns out, all the great and inspiring leaders and organizations in the world they all think, act and communicate the exact same way. We would never know, but the focus on purchasing quality businesses transformed him as an investor and put him on the map. Buffett learned the value of investing in quality companies perhaps by accident, perhaps due to his observations or perhaps due to the influence of his long-term business partner Charlie Munger. He was able to pivot into investing in quality companies, which seemed optically expensive, but were really compounding machines. It was difficult to find cheap companies by the late 1960s however, and his asset size was very large, which meant that he had to learn a new method to compound his net worth. These were the cigar butt type companies, where he would buy low and sell high, rinse and repeat. That was during the 1950s and 1960s, the days of his Buffett Partnership. He is a learning machine.įor example, Buffett started investing in companies that were selling at a portion of their asset values and in merger arbitrage situations. He has been able to successfully adapt to a variety of conditions, and apply his knowledge in a way that continues to compound his capital. Buffett himself is someone who has worked very hard for decades, spending 70 hours/week studying business, strategy, investing and learning from his mistakes.
